JONESTOWN SURVIVORS Plan to Revisit Guyana

JONESTOWN SURVIVORS Plan to Revisit Guyana   I am in the process of arranging  a return trip for some of the survivors and family members back to Guyana. Many people just do not understand why some of us feel the need to go back. Nothing about surviving is clear cut. We have each developed our very own path to move forward. No two of us feel exactly alike. We don't have to. We each came into Peoples Temple in our own fashion - alone, with our families or our friends, as religious or political beings, at a crossroad, or many other ways of ...

JONESTOWN SURVIVOR AT BAY AREA BOOK FESTIVAL 2015

JONESTOWN SURVIVOR AT BAY AREA BOOK FESTIVAL 2015                Last weekend, I hosted an Author’s Table at the Bay Area Book Festival, on Literary Lane in Berkeley. I met many old friends and met even more new ones. Whenever I do Book Talks around the country, I bring my photo boards with photos from many of the aspects of Peoples Temple. One poster shows many pictures from Jonestown, while the other shows photos of important milestones from the past thirty-six years since November 18, 1978. I also had my copy of Kathy Barbour’s newly-published book, Who Died, which is a photographic ...

JONESTOWN SURVIVOR Reflects on Color

A PERSON OF COLOR I am a survivor of Jonestown and Peoples Temple. I can not apologize or excuse enough about the horrific and incomprehensible way 918 wonderful people died. None of my reflections change that. But, my reflections do explain why so many of us joined Peoples Temple and even followed the dream of a Utopian community into the rainforest in Guyana. One of the aspects I loved the most about being in Peoples Temple was that skin color became a non-issue. We soon became blind to color because we were brothers and sisters in one big family, and because our ...

JONESTOWN SURVIVOR Contacted by Swedish Students

Each week, I get at least one email with questions. One of the emails that I got this week was from Swedish students. This was their question: What are the basic forms of expressions, belief and ideas of The Peoples Temple? (How does a member of Peoples Temple express their faith, any special clothing, special behaviour, rituals? etc.) Really, your question has to be answered in two parts – the USA, and Jonestown The basic beliefs of Peoples Temple were that everyone is equal, and should be treated with dignity. No one should be hungry, or should be living in dangerous circumstances, ...

JONESTOWN SURVIVOR: An Insider’s Look Interviewed by Ben Modo on Premier Show

2/2015 JONESTOWN SURVIVOR: An Insider's Look, I was delighted to be invited to New York City to appear on the Premier Show of Ben Modo Live. He was a wonderful host who had certainly done his homework. In the five segments, we discussed everything from my Jonestown survival to my activism today, in education, civil rights and immigration rights. It was a great pleasure meeting him, and his whole crew. He survived a difficult immigration from Cameroon, and is pushing for a progressive agenda to provide JOBS. He has certainly been energized by his own experience. What a delight. Here ...
