JONESTOWN SURVIVOR to Present at UCSD OSHER Class

JONESTOWN SURVIVOR will present at an UCSD OSHER Class: Surviving Peoples Temple at Jonestown: One Woman’s Story Laura Kohls Johnston Peoples Temple was a response and thought to be a solution to the historic events taking place in the 1950s. From about 1953 on, television brought a new dimension to understanding history. We thought we could watch it as it evolved. We could see the characters and personalities, and we could see the consequences immediately. In other words, we could not just ignore the world around us anymore. This lecture will examine that part of U.S. history which allowed the creation and ...

JONESTOWN SURVIVOR Answers Some Student Questions

JONESTOWN SURVIVOR Answers Another Student's Questions: 1. Why did I join Peoples Temple? The United States was going through critical growing pains in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. In the decade of the 1960s, five American heroes were shot and killed by vigilantes - John Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Bobby Kennedy, Malcolm X, and Medgar Evers - and many more besides these heroes. Then, we got into the war in Vietnam. I did not want the world run by bullies, nor by vigilantes. I tried as a single, naive woman to change some things - but was pretty powerless, it turned out. ...

JONESTOWN SURVIVOR Responds

Jonestown Survivor Responds to new questions: Hi there, I appreciate your questions. I do want to reiterate that I write only for myself - for my recollections. Other remaining survivors and close friends had different experiences in Peoples Temple and have their own unique reflections. I speak only about myself and my thoughts today. 1- What was it about Jim Jones that first attracted you to the Temple? From the first time I met Jim, in Redwood Valley, I was impressed at his inclusion and affection for all of us. He would hug, smile, congratulate, assist and nurture all of us regardless of age, ...
